Sleep apnea has been traditionally regarded as little more than a nuisance. Most people think of the disease as being something between the common cold and fibromyalgia on the spectrum of seriousness. Unfortunately, the medical establishment itself has taken the disease little more seriously than the public has. This has led to dismal outcomes in diagnosis and a severe public health problem that has seen tens of thousands of excess deaths per year occurring as a result of the primary and secondary effects of sleep apnea and more information click here.
The truth is that this disease is an extreme menace to anyone who happens to develop it. Obstructive sleep apnea causes partial or total airway occlusion to the patient while they are sleeping. In effect, this is equivalent to asphyxiation. The disease is highly dangerous for its primary effects alone, which include asphyxiation, cerebral hypoxia and potentially fatal cardiac arrhythmias. It is estimated that obstructive sleep apnea is implicated as a primary cause of death in thousands of cases each year throughout the United States and learn more about Avi.
But the real killer aspect of this disease, and one which is the least understood, is the secondary effects that this disease has and its role in the development of some of the more serious causes of mortality and morbidity in the United States. These associated conditions, with which sleep apnea is strongly associated, include such diseases as heart attack, cerebral hemorrhage, stroke, diabetes and lung dysfunction. These are some of the most prominent killers in the country today, accounting for hundreds of thousands of deaths per year. Unfortunately, it is often impossible to know at the time of death if patients who have to succumbed to these illnesses were suffering from late-stage sleep apnea. The reason for this is the woefully under-diagnosed nature of the disease and Avi’s lacrosse camp.
But one man has set out to change all of this. Avi Weisfogel has created Dental Sleep Masters, a program of seminars and educational materials that train dentists in the identification and treatment of sleep apnea. Dental Sleep Masters has already made a significant dent into the rates of undiagnosed sleep apnea cases in the United States.
